Therapists report that they are seeing more and more erotically diverse clients in their

practices. This workshop is a vital primer for therapists, counselors and educators to better

understand their client’s experience, their specific issues and what specialized skills make for the most culturally informed and humble care. Become a better informed and more culturally sensitive therapist with clients who are kinky, polyamorous or into BDSM/fetish. Join two nationally known and respected erotic diversity experts, developmental psychologist Richard Sprott, PhD and clinical sexologist Anna Randall, LCSW, MPH, DHS  in an evening primer, Elements:Essentials in Clinical Practice when Working with the Erotically Diverse. With the exponential increase in interest in kink/BDSM/consensual non-monogamy (CNM), more and more therapists and educators are seeking expert training about the psychology and experiences of those involved in kink/BDSM/CNM.

Format

The workshops will combine didactic instruction, case examples, and group discussion to demonstrate the practice of working with kink-involved clients. Passwords and links for each video will be granted upon purchasing the ticket. This email will also include access to the necessary evaluations and tests to earn CEs.

Learning Objectives

Elements 1: Basics of Kink and Therapy

  • Identify at least key demographics, motivations, behaviors, and relationship roles common in the kink subculture
  • Propose at least three specific issues or concerns that bring kink-involved clients into therapy.

Elements 2: BDSM and the DSM

  • Summarize how the field of mental health has pathologized BDSM behaviors and interests.
  • Compare three differences between the psychiatric/psychological literature and the sociological literature and how they characterize kink interests and behaviors

Elements 3: Consent, Abuse and Criminality

  • Compare the defining differences between BDSM and criminal behavior
  • Differentiate at least four key characteristics of interactions and relationships that distinguish consensual kink/BDSM from abuse and victimization.

Elements 4: Healing and Personal Growth through Kink

  • Outline the key elements of kink activities or relationships used by individuals to build personal growth or healing from past trauma.
  • Summarize the phenomenon of “drop” in detail and identify at least one way in which it can be confused with depression or anxiety disorders.

Elements 5: Diverse Populations and Relationships in Kink

  • Propose at least three ways race, sexual/gender diversity, and class intersect with alternative sexualities and relationship diversity, affecting clinical issues and cultural expressions of alternative sexualities
  • Compare the intersections between kink and polyamory, consensual non-monogamies including mono-poly relationships

Elements 6: Countertransference with Kink-Involved Clients

  • Describe the role and resources supporting best practices in therapy when working with kink-involved clients
  • Review at least two issues of countertransference that might arise in working with kink-involved clients

This training is developed for healthcare professionals or trainees and provides continuing education credit approved by the American Psychological Association (APA) and continuing education credit approved by the American Association of Sexuality Educators, Counselors, and Therapists (AASECT).

Continuing Education

The complete six-part training is eligible for 12 CE units .  CE credit is APA and/or AASECT credit.

CARAS Complaint Resolution Procedures

CARAS is committed to conducting all activities in compliance with the American Psychological Association's Ethical Principles of Psychologists. CARAS will adhere to all legal and ethical responsibilities to be nondiscriminatory in promotional activities, program content, and the treatment of program participants. Monitoring and assessment of these standards will be the responsibility of the Continuing Education Administrator. While CARAS makes every attempt to assure fair treatment for all participants, occasionally complaints will arise about continuing education programs. The procedures for addressing complaints are as follows:

When a participant files a complaint, either orally or in written format, and expects action on the complaint, the following actions will be taken.

1. If the grievance concerns a speaker, the content presented by the speaker, or the style of presentation, the individual making the complaint will be asked to put his/her comments in written format. The on-site CE Coordinator will then pass the comments on to the speaker, assuring the confidentiality of the complainant.

2. If the complaint concerns a workshop offering, its content, level of presentation, or the facilities in which the workshop was offered, on-site CE Coordinator will mediate and attempt to resolve the complaint on-site. If the participant requests action, the Coordinator is empowered to:

a. attempt to move the participant to another workshop, or

b. provide a credit for a subsequent year's workshop, or

c. provide a partial or full refund of the workshop fee.

Actions 2b and 2c will require a written note, documenting the grievance, for record keeping purposes. The note need not be signed by the grieved individual.

3. If the complaint is made after the program has occurred or concerns the CARAS CE programming more generally, the CARAS Complaint Panel will address it as follows:

a. Request that the complainant submit a written complaint and propose an appropriate remedy,

b. provide the instructor(s) with the opportunity to respond to the complaint and propose an appropriate remedy,

c. review these documents, make a final determination, and decide on any remedy.
